Who We Are

The IAOMT is a network of dental, medical and research professionals who seek to raise the standards of scientific biocompatibility in the dental practice with information from the latest interdisciplinary research. The IAOMT was founded in 1984 in Canada and is currently Chartered in the USA as a 501 (c) 3 not for profit organization.

The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology's goal is to promote a global network of independent national and regional organizations that communicate and share the basic principles of science and evidence-based biological dentistry with each other, our communities and the world.

Mission Statement

The mission of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology is to be the trusted Academy of medical, dental and research professionals who investigate and communicate safe science-based treatments to promote whole body health.

Code of Ethics

First, do thy patients no harm. Be ever aware that the oral cavity is part of a human body, and dental disease and dental treatment may affect systemic health of the patient. Never place personal gain before the health and welfare of the patient. Conduct yourself in accordance with the dignity and honor of a health professional and the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. Always attempt to provide treatment that has valid scientific support, but keep an open mind to innovative or advanced treatment possibilities. Be ever mindful of clinical results seen in our patients, but seek valid scientific documentation verifying the results. Make every possible attempt to provide patients with scientific information that can be utilized for informed decisions. Be ever aware of the possibility of potential harmful effects of materials and procedures utilized in dental therapy. Attempt, whenever possible, to preserve human tissue and utilize therapies that are as least invasive as possible.

Our motto

The IAOMT has taken the lead in educating dentists and allied professionals in the methods of safely dealing with amalgam fillings, and safely disposing the waste. It has also led the way in developing more biocompatible approaches in other areas of dentistry, including endodontics, periodontics, and disease prevention. All this while maintaining the motto, “Show me the science!”

Show me the science!
A more biocompatible approach is the hallmark of “biological dentistry.” In using that term, we are not attempting to stake out a new specialty for dentistry, but to describe an attitude that can apply to all facets of dental practice, and to health care in general: to always seek the safest, least toxic way to accomplish the mission of treatment, to do it while treading as softly as possible on the patient’s biological terrain.

Biological Dentistry is not a separate specialty of dentistry, but a thought process, an attitude that can apply to all facets of dental practice, and to health care in general: to always seek the safest, least toxic way to accomplish the goals of modern dentistry, of contemporary healthcare.

“A trusted academy of allied professionals, providing scientific resources to support new levels of integrity and safety in healthcare.”
IAOMT members have been expert witnesses before Congress, FDA, state legislatures, Health Canada, and other government bodies. We support the effort to inform consumers about health risks from amalgam mercury and water fluoridation, and support efforts toward eliminating these risks. We have testified before regulatory agencies about the environmental effects of dental mercury in wastewater, and support regulations to separate mercury from the waste stream of dental offices.

CONFERENCES

Conferences are the nexus of knowledge, where peers exchange more than just information.  Rather, it’s the »get together« factor that makes every attendee leave the event so much richer.  No matter what, conferences present a certain financial and time expense, but this is all worth it for the benefits gained.  These valuable benefits include exchanging opinions, finding out the »how to's« and »what if's«, seeing what the exhibitors in your profession have to offer, listening to the top scientists and practitioners in your field, meeting new colleagues, and, most of all, feeling stronger and more secure because you know you are not alone.  Conferences are your opportunity to become part of a professional network of doctors who support your practices and your knowledge.

Definitions
General Member

A member who has joined the IAOMT in order to become better educated and trained about biological dentistry, but who has not acquired the SMART certification or completed the Accreditation Course. All new members are supplied with information on our recommended procedures and protocols for safe amalgam removal. However, if they are not SMART certified, we do not know if they are completely following the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART).

SMART

A Smart certified member has successfully completed a course on mercury and safe dental mercury amalgam removal, including two units consisting of scientific readings, online learning videos, and tests. The SMART certified dentist has completed a course on the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) which involves learning about the required equipment and applying all of the rigorous safety measures. A SMART certified member may or may not have achieved a higher level of certification such as Accreditation, Fellowship, or Mastership.

Accreditation

Accredited–(AIAOMT):
An Accredited member is a member who has completed the Fundamentals of Biological Dentistry Course and who has attended at least two IAOMT meetings. The Accredited member has also successfully completed a ten unit course on biological dentistry, including units on mercury, safe mercury amalgam removal, fluoride, biological periodontal therapy, hidden pathogens in jawbone and root canals, and more. This course involves an e-learning core curriculum, ten videos, over 50 scientific and medical research articles, and ten tests. To view the full syllabus, click here. The Accredited dentist has further passed an oral interview exam for safe amalgam removal. The Accredited member may or may not be SMART certified and may or may not have achieved a higher level of certification such as Fellowship or Mastership.

Fellow–(FIAOMT):
A Fellow is a member who has achieved Accreditation and who has submitted one scientific review that has been approved by the Scientific Review Committee. A Fellow has also completed an additional 500 hours of credit in research, education, and/or service beyond that of an Accredited member.

Master–(MIAOMT):
A Master is a member who has achieved Accreditation and Fellowship and who has completed 500 hours of credit in research, education, and/or service (in addition to the 500 hours for Fellowship, for a total of 1,000 hours). A Master has also submitted a scientific review that has been approved by the Scientific Review Committee (in addition to the scientific review for Fellowship, for a total of two scientific reviews).
